A systematic review of sub-national food insecurity research in South Africa: Missed opportunities for policy insights.

摘要: Food insecurity is an intractable problem in South Africa. The country has a tradition of evidence-based decision making, grounded the findings national surveys. However, rich insights from sub-national surveys remain largely untapped resource for understandings contextual experience food insecurity. A web-based search identified 169 studies conducted post-apartheid period between 1994 and 2014. systematic review found that used 27 different measures insecurity, confounding comparative analysis at this level. While social grants have brought measure poverty relief household level, unaffordable diets were root cause increasing consumption cheaper, more available preferred 'globalised' foods with high energy content low nutritional value lead to overweight obesity alongside child stunting. Unless comparable set indicators such surveys, they are not able provide information on scope scale problem. Policy makers should be engaging researchers learn these studies, while need share wealth study government strengthen security planning, monitoring, evaluation all levels.
