摘要: LITTLE ATTENTION has been given to the more general features of physiology blue-green algae. Specific attention nitrogen fixation (e.g., Allison et al., 1937; Burris and Wilson, 1946; Fogg, 1947) limited aspects photosynthesis Emerson Lewis, 1942; Frenkel 1950; Duysens, 1952; Brown Webster, 1953). Nutritional requirements have investigated, notably by Fogg (1949), Gerloff al. (1950, 1952) Allen (1952). However, no study carried point developing a alga as reliable tool organism for physiological studies. There two obstacles such development. One may be attributed difficulties isolation lack species in pure culture which suspend readily submit simplicity manipulation possible with green algae Chlorella Scenedesmus. A second difficulty arises from inadequate provision carbon dioxide inherent most methods used. defined terms maximum growth yield obtained cultures cotton-stoppered flasks. Methods not developed routine rate, characteristic far useful interpretable work. The' present paper presents development media led description salient characteristics three algae: Anabaena variabilis, Anacystis nidulans, Nostoc muscorum G. Fragmentary data on other are included. MATERIALS AND METHODS.-Because uncertainties taxonomy simpler used will described their history. 1. variabilis (Kiitzing). Filamentous, but filaments very short turbulent culture; isolated R. C. Hecker Cylindrospermum sp. (1950); revised identification E. Pringsheim. 2. nidulans. Twoto four-cell filaments, unicellular established one us (WK) purified M. B. Allen, tentative F. Drouet; original found. 3. G Gerloff. 4. forming clumps even Allison. 5. cylindrica (Lemmerman) . Fila-
