摘要: Polarization-dependent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is shown to be a new probe of molecular-field effects on the electronic structure isolated molecules. A combined experimental and theoretical analysis explains linear dichroism observed in Cl $2p$ RIXS following $1s$ excitation HCl ${\mathrm{CF}}_{3}\mathrm{Cl}$ as due effects, including singlet-triplet exchange, indicating polarized-RIXS provides direct spin-orbit-state populations applicable any molecule.
