German Unification as a Turning Point in East German Women's Life Course: Biographical Changes in Work and Family Roles

摘要: In order to explore the effects of German unification on life course East women three age cohorts, 36 biographical interviews were conducted. The purpose research was examine whether meant a complete break with Democratic Republic's (GDR) standard biography in terms voluntary acceptance West patterns, or modification old patterns based necessity. Results demonstrate that historical moment 1989/90 (the Wende turning point) has changed plans cohorts Germany different ways, depending its timing their course. youngest cohort differ most significantly from “GDR woman” family formation is postponed and employment prioritized over family. Rather than being tradition adoption Western norms, this means course, because desire combine work continues dominate.
