Social Comparisons and Pro-social Behavior: Testing "Conditional Cooperation" in a Field Experiment

摘要: People behave pro-socially in a wide variety of situations that standard economic theory is unable to explain. Social comparison one explanation for such pro-social behavior: people contribute if others or cooperate as well. This paper tests social field experiment at the University Zurich. Each semester every single student has decide whether he she wants two Funds. We provided 2500 randomly selected students with information about average behavior population. Some received high percentage population contributed, while relatively low contributed. The results show pro-socially, conditional on others. more cooperate, inclined do so type person important. are able fix i?½typesi?½ by looking revealed past behavior. persons seem care others, other not affected reference group.
