Love on the rocks: aggressive behavior and alcohol abuse in rural Mexico

摘要: I use experimental data for the evaluation of Oportunidades, Mexican ∞agship poverty alleviation program, to study determinants alcohol abuse and domestic violence. The a combination cash transfers women human capital investments, decreases husbands’ by 15% changes their aggressive behavior depending on transfer size, education, spousal age gap. While violence 37% in households entitled small transfers, husbands with traditional views gender roles become more when wife’s entitlement large threatens identity. This evidence indirectly rejects income pooling between spouses shows that targeting as recipients micro-credit or other welfare programs may have additional beneflcial efiects also reducing alcoholism most households, but risk increase some.
