摘要: Clay minerals belong to the phyllosilicate family of minerals, which are characterized by their layered structures composed polymeric sheets silica tetrahedra attached with octahedral sheets. Research on clay has received considerable attention because natural prevalence, reactivity, low cost, nonhazardous nature in handling, etc. have been widely investigated for significance various environmental, industrial, and geological settings. In this review, we will discuss four major groups (kandite, illite, smectite, vermiculite) as well some other family. This chapter summarizes types, structural chemistry, characteristics minerals; describes emerging role immobilization hazardous heavy metals organic contaminants; highlights engineered environments reduce manage mobilization toxic metals; partially elucidates sequestration carbon dioxide at sites.
