Designed as a substitute, both epidermal and dermal equivalents been under investigation used clinically for over decade. A novel bi-layered living equivalent, Apligraf, has approved countries is approval US FDA treatment venous ulcers. Derived from foreskin, cultured neonatal fibroblasts are combined with bovine type I collagen form neodermis which keratinocytes placed, proliferate differentiate. In addition use ulcers, Apligraf also reported acute wounds such surgical excision sites partial thickness donor sites. Apligraf's lent insight into its biologic behavior, safety efficacy. Through these experiences, it learned that behaves similar autograft, safe effective. addition, appears 'take', many cases persists, not rejected but ultimate fate known.
