摘要: Abstract PURPOSE: For nearly 60 years, official U.S. mortality statistics have been age-adjusted using the age distribution from population for year 1940. A new standard, projected Year 2000 has approved use by Department of Health and Human Services ( DHHS ). It will be implemented Government published deaths occurring in 1999. The standard reflects older population; 6.8% was 65 years or more 1940, as compared to 12.6% 2000. METHODS: This paper investigates consequences comparing death rates time, place, characteristics, adjusted both 1940 standards. RESULTS: changes level rate total many causes death, standard. example, 1995 diseases heart is 138 per 100,000 when but 296 may change comparison if there are substantial differences age-specific rates. ratio ischemic disease black relative white males 1.07 0.96 CONCLUSIONS: potential levels comparisons Age-adjustment an averaging process, consequently, view data effectively a whole while possibly obscuring important details.
