We have started a large survey for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors type Ia supernovaewith UVES spectrograph at ESO VLT (ESO SNIa Progenitor surveY – SPY). About 400 white dwarfs were checkedfor radial velocity variations during first 15 months t his project, twice number investigated duringthe last 20 years. give an overview SPY project and present results Fifty four new DDs been discovered, seven them lined (only 18 6 objects these groups known before, respectively). The final sample isexpected to contain 150 200 DDs. Eight pre-cataclysmic also detected. is DD surveywhich encompasses non-DA dwarfs. produces animmense, unique very high resolution whitedwarf spectra, which provides lot spin-off opportunities. describe our projects exploit thedetermination basic parameters, kinematics, rotational velocities A catalogue with subs et ofour dwarf data has already published by Koester al. (2001).
