The Cycle of Violence: Understanding Individual Participation in Collective Violence

摘要: Why do “ordinary” people engage in collective violence, harming others on behalf of their group? In this article, we argue that the violent group itself, and identity it bestows participating members, is an often overlooked yet fundamental source motivation for individual's participation violence. Reviewing insights from social moral psychology, military history, public health, outline how psychology individual behavior presents a puzzle. For ordinary person, violence aversive distressing experience, leads to more future. A better understanding dynamics allows us make sense paradox. Violent groups can promote among members by increasing members' particularly through identification deliberate strategies, removing psychological obstacles (i.e., making less aversive). Our synthesis literature points cycle individuals' which motivates increases with groups.
