Biogas Technology in South Africa, Problems, Challenges and Solutions

摘要: Biogas is a gas that produced from the biodegradation of organic materials. It consists mainly methane and carbon dioxide. The biogas anaerobic digestion can be solution to South Africa’s energy problems. used for electricity generation, cooking as transport fuel. There are over 200 digesters scattered across Africa use not growing fast in country irrespective its benefits reducing related problems such pollution shortage. This paper reviews technology highlights problems, challenges solutions expansion technology. research was conducted by surveying installed measuring potential selected digesters. include; lack work on technology, low efficiency compared conventional fuels diesel petrol, cheap cost coal fired thermal power stations, large amounts hydrogen sulphides cause corrosion pipes internal combustion engines. highlighted should sized accordance with availability substrate. In addition, calorific value improved so it fuel engines generator sets. also revealed community based education production usage need initiated reduce digester failures. would improve country.
