IceCube and the discovery of high-energy cosmic neutrinos

摘要: By transforming a cubic kilometer of natural Antarctic ice into neutrino detector, the IceCube project created opportunity to observe cosmic neutrinos. We describe experiment and complementary methods presently used study flux recently discovered In one method, events are selected in which neutrinos interacted inside instrumented volume yielding sample dominated by electron tau flavor. Alternatively, another method detects secondary muons produced for having traveled through Earth reach providing pure muon will summarize results obtained with enlarged data set collected since initial discovery appraise current status high-energy astronomy. The large extragalactic observed points nonthermal universe comparable energy neutrinos, gamma rays rays. Continued observations may be closing on source candidates. this context, we highlight potential multimessenger analyses as well compelling case constructing next-generation detector larger order magnitude.
