摘要: Many cities globally are seeking strategies to counter the consequences of both a hotter and drier climate. While urban heat mitigation have been shown beneficial effects on health, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, their implications for water conservation not widely examined. Here we use suite satellite-supported regional climate simulations in California show that broad implementation cool roofs, strategy, only results significant cooling, but can also meaningfully decrease outdoor consumption by reducing evaporative irrigation demands. Irrigation across major metropolitan areas is reduced up 9% savings per capita range from 1.8 15.4 gallons day 18 counties Total found be highest Los Angeles county, reaching about 83 million day. Cool roofs valuable solution addressing adaptation challenges faced multiple sectors California.
