摘要: For decades, coal has been king in central Appalachia. The people of this region have devoted their lives to providing energy the nation, fueling first and second industrial revolutions nearly 40 percent used United States today. Known as one unhealthiest communities city Williamson, located southern West Virginia, is working encourage healthy living by diversifying its portfolio, new economic opportunities for businesses, creating a strong workforce with competitive skill sets, growing local food systems living, increasing quality life community. Operating under banner “Sustainable Williamson” utilizing emerging concept applied sustainability, community developing “praxis theory” approach specific focus upon socio-economic effects ideology. This thesis explores theoretical intersections between ideology materialism order provide existing practitioners sustainability an initial framework successful projects Appalachia beyond.
