摘要: Abstract The rhizome of the plant Hypoxis rooperi (“African potato”) is known for its traditional and ethnomedical uses in treatment benign prostatic hyperplasia other diseases. We have characterized an extract derived from H. rooperi, isolated major bioactive compound, hypoxoside, obtained aglycone, rooperol, by enzymatic digestion. Absorption, fluorescence emission bidimensional NMR complete spectral data these compounds were obtained. antioxidant capacity both was fully analyzed through thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) Trolox equivalent (TEAC) assays, it compared to catechins olive biophenolics. Both showed a strong capacity, although rooperol exhibited higher activity against lipid peroxidation which correlated affinity phospholipid membranes as extremely high lipid/water partition coefficient (Kp = 3.4 × 104). study lipophilic (EtOH) hydrophilic (water) TEAC values revealed that more hydrophobic compounds, had greater than ones, probably indicating assay may be reliable compounds. also efficacy herbal extracts, such leaf or green tea. Moreover, neither evidence acute oral toxicity nor adverse effects observed when commercial containing 45% hypoxoside used at dosage 2000 mg/kg. results this work contribute understanding biological described dicatechols African potato food cosmetic applications.
