摘要: Summary The theoretical maximum rate of increase for the African elephant is calculated at 7%. This figure agrees closely with observed Addo Elephant Park, highest reported elephants living under natural conditions. An population increasing soon reaches a stable age distribution in which 48% animals are older than 11 years age, (the first reproduction) and 6.7% calves (less one year old). Several papers have frequencies populations up to twice this percentage. Calculations presented show that such high calf both theoretically impossible on sustained basis, internally inconsistent data these papers.
