Evaluating safe routes to school events that designate days for walking and bicycling

摘要: This paper presents a case study evaluation of days designated for walking and bicycling as part Safe Routes to School program. The examines two elementary schools in Moscow, Idaho that annually participate bicycling, “International Walk Day” the fall “Fill Racks!” spring. Students or school were counted before after events. For comparison, counts also observed at nearby not involved with Count data was collected 8 days. Furthermore, 45 students 17 parents surveyed; five four community leaders interviewed. count showed significant increase using active modes travel on day event few weeks later. interviews surveys showed, among other things, there is strong support special events most felt increased their child's motivation walk school. Many said spring prompted child return cold winter months. Policy implications lessons learned are provided.
