摘要: An improved version of a transverse ion source was developed which uses selected chemical ionization mass spectrometry techniques inside particle nucleation flow tube. These new are very unique, in that the is done tube rather than by having to remove compounds and clusters interest lost on first contact, with any surfaces. The also unique because it allows reaction time be varied over more an order magnitude, turn makes possible separation induced cluster growth from charging preexisting molecular clusters. As result combining these capabilities, ever measurements prenucleation were performed. intermediate stage gas-to-particle conversion process. This technique provides means observing containing 2, 3, 4, ... up about 8 sulfuric acid molecules, where critical size under measurement conditions 4 or 5. Thus, process can now directly observed even beyond investigated. details this investigation discussed recently submitted paper, included as Appendix A. Measurements diffusion coefficient clustered with water molecule have been detail another paper B. empirical results both papers provide test present theories. They hope for resolving many huge discrepancies between field observation model prediction nucleation. second part research conducted project directed towards development measuring sulfur oxidation products.
