The surgical treatment of esophageal cancer in Sudan: A 100 consecutive cases

摘要: Abstract Objective Esophageal cancer is the most common gastrointestinal (GI) in The Sudan. This study aimed to evaluate outcome of surgical management. Methods A 100 consecutive patients who underwent esophagectomy Shaab Hospital Khartoum during period June 2003–Aug 2007 were studied. Results mean age was 55 ± 14 years with an equal sex ratio. Fifty five per cent presented stage III&IV locally advanced and or metastatic disease. Sixty seven percent a 2-stage resection, Lewis Tanner type while 27% 3-stage McKeon operation 6% had total gastrectomy distal roux-en-y reconstruction. 30 days postoperative mortality 10%. In 75 could be traced, overall 5 survival 21% (n = 16) 10 8% (n = 6). Conclusion There great improvement early from 1986 10% this series. treatment offered rapid symptoms relief which suited coming distant locations couldn't afford stay for long Capital as will required if chemo-radiotherapy used sole neo-adjuvant treatment.
