摘要: Abstract Background: Needlestick injury has been identified as a major cause of exposure to blood and body fluids. The heparin-lock intermittent intravenous procedure was implicated in the largest number needlestick-related exposures (26%) at this 1100-bed tertiary care hospital, replacement system imperative. Cost concerns, however, necessitated that products not increase overall hospital costs. Methods: A needleless access (Interlink IV Access System; Baxter Healthcare Corp., Parenterals Division, Deerfield, Ill.) introduced. Effectiveness cost-benefit were analyzed by comparing needlestick injuries their associated costs, well costs relevant procedures, for year before introduction new product with those 1 after implementation system. Results: During study period, 78.7% effective reducing line—related injuries. There an reduction 43.4% total from all procedures events. incremental cost ranged 5.3% additional 5.7% savings, without even considering less quantifiable benefits avoidance injury, time saved using product, decreased infection rate. Conclusion: When used intended, extremely injuries, does pay itself.
