摘要: The importance of reliable electricity to the economy continues expand, and much focus climate policy is on generation from non-fossil fuel, non-nuclear sources. Global use expected increase dramatically as a result information age, policies electrify vehicles, rapid economic growth in China, India, Brazil other developing countries. However, with exception hydro biomass sources, alternative renewable sources energy are variable or intermittent. This imposes additional costs electrical grids creates problems for managing them. In this chapter, operation markets (grids) described, effect when an intermittent source power introduced into grid. Because largest generating capacity has come wind turbines, used illustrate challenge increasing reliance need extra reserves discussed, grid model evaluate integrating existing If system operator can invest decommission assets carbon tax employed, will not entirely replace coal until becomes exorbitant; however, if investment nuclear permitted, analysis chapter indicates have no role play. Wind provide important contribution future supply, but its be limited by lack storage all more so regions lacking access reservoirs.
