"As a Husband I Will Love, Lead, and Provide" Gendered Access to Land in Ghana

摘要: Summary Improving women’s access to land is high on the agricultural policy agenda of both governmental and non-governmental agencies. Yet, determinants rationale gendered are not well understood. This paper argues that gender relations more than outcomes negotiations within households. It explains importance social norms, perceptions, formal informal rules shaping for male female farmers at four levels: (1) household/family, (2) community, (3) state, (4) market. The framework applied Ghana, using results from qualitative field work. Norms household family organization men’s responsibilities capabilities play a key role in allocation resources. However, these norms perceptions dynamic evolve jointly with development markets changes values inputs such as labor land. Theoretical models represent distribution assets result intrahousehold bargaining should be revised, extrahousehold factors included. From perspective, laws ensure equality terms inheritance gender-equitable property upon divorce can improving rights. their impact may limited where customary rights dominate continue discriminate according gender.
