摘要: Pollution spills are a serious threat to rivers causing fish kills, and lasting damage the biological systems of rivers. At present financial penalties used deter such incidents but no mitigation system exists. A multiple method approach involving hydrological water chemistry based field study, flume tank experiment, computer fluid dynamics model 1D flow was under taken examine feasibility using wave released from reservoir dilute pollution spills. Nine waves were reservoirs on three different catchments. Water quality measured downstream sewage treatment works progress tracked down river with gauges. Additionally in one experiment slug rhodamine dye into ahead wave. To understand impact mixing processes within column, particular longitudinal dispersion, series experiments ran. In both sets end either dye, or particles mid tank, interaction between then captured as footage analysed. Across found move significantly faster than baseflow mean velocities ranging 0.86ms-1 1.63ms-1. Holme River would be caught 3 hours 46 minutes. Catch up times response demonstrated test estimated providing management focused results previously unreported literature. Dilution parameters including NH4 conductivity recorded during passage at treat outflows majority experiments. Peak dilutions 59% for 58% recorded. An increase dispersion magnitude observed unclear tank.
