摘要: Breath research has almost invariably focussed on the identification of endogenous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as disease biomarkers. After five decades, a very limited number breath tests measuring VOCs is applied to clinic. In this perspective article, we explore some factors that may have contributed current lack clinical applications VOCs. We discuss potential pitfalls experimental design, analytical challenges, well considerations regarding biochemical pathways impinge application specific point towards several lines evidence showing analysis based administration exogenous been more successful strategy, with currently clinic, compared measurement Finally, propose novel approach, use VOC (EVOC) probes strategy measure activity metabolic enzymes in vivo, function organs, through analysis. present longitudinal data EVOC probe strategies also gathered important induces significant changes previous exposures same compounds. could herald new wave substrate-based tests, potentially bridging gap between tools and applications.
