摘要: Urban areas are expanding, changing the structure and productivity of landscapes. While some urban have been shown to hold substantial biomass, these systems is largely unknown. We assessed how conversion from forest land uses affected both biomass across eastern Massachusetts. found that held less than half adjacent expanses with a plot level mean density 33.5 ± 8.0 Mg C ha-1. As intensity development increased, canopy cover, stem density, decreased. Analysis Quercus rubra tree cores showed tree-level basal area increment nearly doubled following development, increasing 17.1 3.0 35.8 4.7 cm2 yr-1. Scaling observed densities growth rates within developed suggests an aboveground rate 1.8 0.4 ha-1 yr-1, comparable nearby, intact forests. The contrasting high lower pools suggest highly dynamic ecosystem rapid turnover. global extent continues grow, cities consider climate mitigation options, as verification net greenhouse gas emissions emerges critical for policy, quantifying role vegetation in regional-to-global carbon budgets will become ever more important.
