摘要: The papers presented in this volume were contributed by participants in the U.S.-Japan Seminar on Fuzzy Sets and Their Applications, held at the University of California, Berkeley, July 1974. These cover a broad spectrum topics related to the theory fuzzy sets, ranging from its mathematical aspects applications human cognition, communication, decisionmaking, engineering systems analysis. Basically, set is class which there may be continuum grades membership as, say, long objects. Such sets underlie much our ability summarize, communicate, make decisions under uncertainty or partial information. Indeed, appear play an essential role especially relation concept formation, pattern classification, logical reasoning. Since inception about decade ago, has evolved many directions, finding pplications wide variety fields phenomena study are too complex ill defined analyzed conventional techniques. Thus, providing basis for systematic approach approximate reasoning, well have substantial impact scientific methodology years ahead, particularly realms psychology, economics, law, medicine, decision analysis, information retrieval, artificial intelligence. The was sponsored Cooperative Science Program, with joint support National Foundation Japan Society Promotion Science. In organizing seminar, co-chairmen received considerable help J.E. O’Connell L. Trent Foundation; staff Science; D. J. Angelakos his University Berkeley. As co-editors volume, we wish also express heartfelt appreciation Terry Brown her invaluable assistance preparation manuscript, Academic Press undertaking publication.
