摘要: Abstract The fate of sewage from the Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) ocean outfall was assessed by measurements trialkylamines (TAMs) and coprostanol (COP) in bottom sediments San Pedro Shelf (southern California). wastewater discharge is an important source for steroidal markers, as deduced ratios COP to other sterols (COP/epicoprostanol, COP/dinosterol COP/total sterols) very high concentrations TAMs (35 μ g g−1) (8.3 immediate vicinity outfall. Decreasing both molecular markers with increased distance were observed, except north-west, which corresponds predominant current direction region. offshore portions Newport Gabriel submarine canyons act efficient traps fine-grained containing TAMs, have a clay affinity characteristic their amphiphilic chemical properties. TAM/COP ratio (0.3–11.2) larger than effluent (0.07), indicating relatively higher stability under prevailing oxic conditions. Because two exhibit different distributions fates, integrated use provides effective tool assess effects discharges marine environment.
