Unexpected enhancement of ozone exposure and health risks during National Day in China

摘要: Abstract. China is confronting increasing ozone (O3) pollution that worsens air quality and public health. Extremely O3 occurs more frequently under special events unfavorable meteorological conditions. Here we observed significantly elevated maximum daily 8-h average (MDA8) (up to 98 ppb) during the Chinese National Day Holidays (CNDH) in 2018 throughout China, with a prominent rise by up 120 % compared previous week. The model shows increased precursor emissions regional transport are major contributors elevation. In Pearl River Delta region, contributed 30 ppb CNDH. Simultaneously, aggravated health risk due high O3, inducing 33 % additional deaths China. Moreover, tourist cities such as Sanya, mortality even increases 303 %. This first comprehensive study investigate CNDH at national level, aiming arouse focuses on holiday impact from public.
