摘要: Abstract Initial results are presented from a global eddy resolving simulation using the Parallel Ocean Program (POP) general circulation model. The model has 1/10° horizontal spacing at equator, employs displaced pole grid in Northern Hemisphere to allow inclusion of Arctic Ocean, and uses 40 vertical levels. was spun up rest combination daily NCEP/NCAR reanalysis monthly observational data products for period 1979–1993 as surface forcing. As expected, exhibits extremely turbulent behavior, with energy agreeing well satellite altimetry both location magnitude most high-activity areas. However, significant problems exist Gulf Stream/North Atlantic Current region, relatively minor discrepancies occur elsewhere. Overall, is represented, acceptable values overturning mass heat transports, good agreement transport estimates major current systems. This represents step forward high resolution ocean modeling, applications prediction, climate, science.
