摘要: Abstract Effects of burrows and burrowing by fiddler crabs on production decomposition organic carbon in a salt marsh Sapelo Island, G A, were measured. Field experiments determined rate excavation from belowground; efflux dioxide burrows; effect growth Spartina alterniflora; density roots near salinity, pH, phosphate concentration, ammonium concentration burrow water. Fiddler transported 26 g C m-2 belowground July 1979. Annual was estimated at 157 m-2, or 20% the S. alterniflora. Mean respiration 2.1 mg CO2 h-1, accounting for to 90% sediment respiration, depending wetness. Burrows increased alterniflora standing stocks 23% high marsh. Chemistry water much different interstitial Salinity 20–23°/∞ while that 37–45°/∞. also contained levels ammonium. The combined effects added nutrients, lower greater oxygen, sulfide, flow through sediments as result crab are suggested reasons stock short
