Genetic counseling student demographics: an empirical comparison of two cohorts

摘要: Genetic counseling student characteristics may be evolving with the expansion and diversification of genetic field. We compared previously accrued experiences students enrolled in 2018-2019 academic year surveyed by Lega et al. (Journal Counseling, 14, 395; 2005). Four-hundred thirty completed a survey (60% response rate) assessing demographics, select application experiences, encouragement discouragement to apply programs, career certainty motivations. Data analyses comprised descriptive statistics, content analysis open-ended responses, t tests chi-square compare responses variables also assessed Similarities between two cohorts included most being female, White/Caucasian, biology majors; they reported similar amount type support discouragement; had strong certainty. Salient group differences current cohort having larger proportion males (8% versus 3%; p=.007), greater percentage parent(s) high socioeconomic status (SES; 31% 17%; p=.005), lower first cycle acceptance rate (71% 80%; p<.001), were more strongly influenced pursue future income (p<.001), desire help others (p=.002), profession's prestige programs' 2-year duration (p<.001). Students applied an average six programs during their paid, on average, $1,648 for all interview expenses year. A vast majority (99%) advocacy (most commonly crisis intervention) shadowing opportunities (94%), 26% worked as assistants prior acceptance. Most interested primarily cancer genetics at time completion. The field should continue efforts improve racial gender diversity identify ways increase program accessibility/affordability individuals SES levels.
