摘要: In the first comprehensive reviews since 1969, two high-level reports on status of U.S. marine ecosystems and resources have been released: that nongovernmental Pew Oceans Commission in 2003 congressionally mandated Ocean Policy 2004. Although com- missions differed breadth depth their mandates, findings state our oceans need for new management approaches are similar, major recommendations science, governance, conservation, education echo reinforce each other. The history behind commissions structure objectives remind us crucial roles conservation practition- ers scientists must play implementation report recommendations. suggest priorities practitioners to improve management, better manage protect ocean ecosystems. To redirect activities affecting global resources, integrated research; outreach by terrestrial, aquatic, conserva- tion practitioners; a clear definition is essential.
