摘要: Marine sponges harbour complex microbial communities of ecological and biotechnological importance. Here, we propose the application widespread sponge family Irciniidae as an appropriate model in microbiology biochemistry research. Half a gram one specimen hosts hundreds bacterial species—the vast majority which are difficult to cultivate—and dozens fungal archaeal species. The structure these symbiont assemblages is shaped by host highly stable over space time. Two types quorum-sensing molecules have been detected animals, hinting at microbe-microbe host-microbe signalling being important processes governing dynamics holobiont. Irciniids vulnerable disease outbreaks, concerns emerged about their conservation changing climate. They nevertheless amenable mariculture laboratory maintenance, attractive targets for metabolite harvesting experimental biology endeavours. Several bioactive terpenoids polyketides retrieved from sponges, but actual producer (host or symbiont) compounds has rarely clarified. To tackle this, further pertinent questions concerning functioning, resilience physiology organisms, truly multi-layered approaches integrating cutting-edge microbiology, biochemistry, genetics zoology research needed.
