Masculinity, Racism, Social Support, and Colorectal Cancer Screening Uptake Among African American Men: A Systematic Review

摘要: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is highly preventable when CRC screening utilized, yet completion among African American men relatively low and their mortality rates remain 50% higher juxtaposed to White counterparts. Since a growing body of literature indicates masculinity, racism, social support each have strong influences on uptake, this systematic review examined the connections between these three sociocultural factors uptake men. Potential studies were retrieved from MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO. Cited reference searching for final sample was employed identify assess additional inclusion using Scopus. The methodological quality reviewed evidence also evaluated. Nineteen met inclusion/exclusion criteria. Thirteen nonexperimental research designs; quasi-experimental design present in four, two utilized experimental designs. Studies published 2000 2014; majority 2009 2013. Social most frequently addressed (84%) while masculinity racism equally studied with paucity (11%) influence screening. After evaluating conceptual characteristics studies, 42% fell below average rigor. need increased attention correlates are highlighted review, important recommendations practice provided. Alongside call more rigorous research, further examining warranted.
