摘要: Author(s): Shih, Kristy | Advisor(s): Pyke, Karen D Abstract: Using qualitative in-depth interviews with daughters-in-law, my dissertation engages a feminist analysis of gender and power dynamics in Taiwanese, Chinese American, Mexican American families. A primary theoretical objective is to "research against cultural essentialism" as reflected tendency view racial/ethnic minority families homogeneous without internal variation, thus reducing family ethnic values ideals. This study challenges essentialist assumptions that predominate the literature by identifying similarities among three groups, well variations within each group. Further, I consider how socio-structural factors account for between-group within-group variations. Chapter 1 interrogates filial piety inform daughters-in-law's understanding their relationship immigrant mothers-in-law. Ideals respect accord limited authority mothers-in-law who engage other mechanisms power, such domestic expertise.
