摘要: There is potentially tension between world class research and global standards on the one hand local contexts of engineering development practice other. One aims at scientific status entirely new knowledge, suggesting just standard quality. The other building products processes that might bring socio-economic development, often prizing pragmatism bricolage. UK-funded programme ‘Understanding Sustainable Energy Solutions in Developing Countries’ (USES) was set up understanding such tensions, if they exist, can be transcended. It funded by two organisations, UK Engineering Physical Sciences Research Council international agency, Department for International Development. This paper analyses USES programme, looking its establishment, partnership building, undertaken early impact. shows goes beyond ‘normal’ pure versus applied, policy low-tech high-tech dualities. Instead, it throws a complex series issues require attention to lead long standing sustainable economic social development. The suggests concept ‘liquid engineering’ good way conceptualise ways which without denying tensions dualistic realities, has moved towards more fluid process take account multiple goals. highlights progress made being accepted as legitimate area theory practice.
