Alcohol-Related Causes of Death and Drinking Patterns in Moldova as Compared to Russia and Ukraine

摘要: Most studies dedicated to alcohol-related mortality in the former USSR countries explore situation primarily Russia and Belarus, while somewhat less so Ukraine. In these countries, consumption of spirits is one main contributors a huge decline adult health since mid-60s, especially among males. Moldova, also an ex-Soviet country, quite different that their drinking habits are much closer those Mediterranean culture, although they still like Ukraine level alcohol highest world life expectancy at birth lowest developed countries. This study provides descriptive analysis changes trends patterns Moldova as compared Russia, both during Soviet period after Independence. We found accidental poisoning by minor importance contrast Ukraine, whereas very high liver cirrhosis without traditional sex gap peculiar feature Moldovan pattern. Furthermore, burden accounts for lower female Russian or Ukrainian counterparts. attempt explain this phenomenon hypothesizing existence harmful homemade wine which seems affect males females equally. anti-alcohol policies must include measures aimed reducing wine.
