摘要: Mobile phones are not only a ubiquitous social accessory, but rapid technology advances have transformed them into feature-rich, Internet-enabled mobile PCs—a role once reserved for touchscreen-based personal digital assistants (PDAs). Although the most widespread phone styles in circulation feature classic combination of numeric keypad and non-touchscreen display, larger touchscreen devices gaining ground, as indicated by fervor surrounding new such Apple's iPhone LG's Prada phone. Yet evolve, users will remain constrained limits their own visual, physical, mental resources. My research has focused on specific limitation that often one hand available to operate device, which can be especially problematic devices, since they frequently designed two-handed stylus operation. Considering growing volumes data small now store connect to, well expanding cultural phones, improving usability computing potentially enormous implications user productivity, satisfaction even safety. My exploratory surveys suggested one-handed use is very common today's hardware software designs do support performing many tasks with hand. Motivated these findings, goal this dissertation contribute substantial knowledge form empirically backed design guidelines interaction techniques operation particular emphasis those touch-sensitive displays. The device product series studies conducted pursuit foundational behavior, preference, thumb capabilities touchscreen-thumb characteristics single-handed use. I also demonstrate application through development evaluation four applications. Two involve navigating among programs, provides an interface searching large sets, last offers generalized mechanism controlling arbitrary interfaces thumb. Each applications explores different technique perspective its viability
