摘要: Ocean island volcanoes and large igneous provinces, both of which represent mantle plume volcanism, are attractive drilling targets because compelling scientific issues, the layered structure lava accumulations, demonstrated capability to retrieve a high percentage core in many environments. Although programs supporting on-land — ICDP, U.S., NSF-Continental Dynamics nominally about continental drilling, primary dichotomy is between ship-based offshore (IODP). Mantle volcanic rocks accessible oceanic settings as well on continents. Drilling coring ordered, datable sequences lavas can address questions mechanisms magma generation transport, geochemical geophysical plumes their relationship composition deep mantle, structural evolution volcanoes, subsidence history piles, flexural properties lithosphere, hydrology, alteration geobiology subsurface
