Rydberg Series in the NO Spectrum: An Interpretation of Quantum Defects and Intensities in the s and d Series

摘要: The observed quantum defects in the s and d Rydberg series of NO are interpreted. It has been shown previously that nf states conform to a long‐range force model. This model assumes motion electron is determined only by potential NO+ core. same model, when applied nd states, fails reproduce observations. differences between predicted energies result from: (i) exchange effects increased nuclear attraction inside core, (ii) required orthogonality wavefunction with respect core electrons, (iii) mixing dσ sσ series. In order describe these (called penetration effects) quantitatively, supplemented additional parameters.
