摘要: Summary. Simple analytic solutions for tidal oscillations in estuaries, such as that of the Thames, are discussed terms linearized theory. It is shown progressive waves constant speed (gh)1/2 peculiar to channels cross section, and cannot be regarded adequate approximations slowly diverging estuaries frequently supposed. The effect friction principally cause a change phase along an estuary giving progression high-water times, difference between current elevation remaining essentially classical standing wave. Measurements Thames support this conclusion. Recent publications treating these tides therefore disputed. The theory predict several observed features tide when coefficient given value K= 0.0024. These from Southend Hammersmith, variation range high-water/slack-water interval Greenwich. It suggested frictionless terms—“progressive wave” “standing wave”—can applied frictional situation only with considerable caution.
