摘要: Insects build myriad structures out of diverse materials. These serve purposes that range from facilitating prey capture to housing their entire colony. Whereas some insects operate solitarily, others collectively large and complex structures. The architecture these vis-a-vis ultimate function poses fascinating questions require multidisciplinary investigations. Importantly, because the underlying design architectural principles have evolved over millions years withstand multitude environmental perturbations, they offer important lessons for human-made vast variety insect-built reflects how adapted resolve ecological challenges in specific habitats. Here, we survey a comparative perspective ask what can be gleaned them. We discuss key hypotheses about building-behaviours, neural underpinnings, functional role biomimetic potential.
