摘要: I read the interesting article by Jamie Aug Henry et al. entitled ‘‘Essential Surgery: The Way Forward’’ [1]. As had previously indicated in my letter to editor [2], countries sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) would benefit more at this time of their development, if surgical training programs are shorter (like 3years) and focused so that essential or primary surgeons trained large number for level referral hospitals especially rural districts. Also, another 12 months should be formally done general practitioners/family physicians (GPs/FPs) who will practise district [3– 5]. GPs/FPs undergo given Certificate Additional Training (CAT) surgery. with CAT surgery additional incentives income recognition career structure care [3–5]. terminology ‘‘Non Surgeon Physician’’ has been advocated al other perform There is now increased awareness medical specialties patients, even areas Nigeria similar SSA. In opinion, a ‘‘non-surgeon physician’’ performs may not accepted such countries. Instead, like ‘‘Surgical Medical Officer’’ differentiate them from specialist/consultant surgeon seem appropriate. Surgical officers definition This proposal applies only SSA do accept Physician Clinicians’’.
