Fiddler Crab Exercise: The Energetic Cost of Running Sideways

摘要: The fiddler crab, Uca pugilator, used sideways octapedal locomotion during 15 min of treadmill exercise. At each velocity tested (0.06, 0.11 and 0.16 km h−1), oxygen consumption (VOO2) showed only a modest, sluggish elevation; ‘steady-state’ was never attained. highest VOO2 recorded, 0.22 mlO2g−1h−1, 4.4 times the resting rate. Net whole body lactate (WBL) found to increase at constant rate throughout exercise period. During recovery, WBL removal followed similar time course returned pre-exercise rates in 30–45 min. Although fate after is unknown for crustaceans, calculations suggest that not enough consumed by crab recovery oxidize completely CO2 H2O. A gluconeogenic compatible with data. As running increased, increased slightly, while net production substantial elevation. low aerobic metabolism accounted 60% ATP produced when anaerobic fermentation are considered. Anaerobic dominated medium high 60 70% ATP, respectively. minimum cost transport, least amount energy required transport given mass distance, determined using both sources. This estimation economy pugilator within range predicted vertebrate mass.
