While the comparably mature field of medical biotechnology now reveals its true potential, marine is still in realm future. As we explore earth for new sources natural chemicals, search waters. Myriad organisms, most unknown to us, live there. Many produce compounds that can be commercialized, or organisms themselves may through genetic methods. For decades, scientists studied ocean depths searching unique molecules organisms. But not until early 1980s was there a synthesis uniting products, ecology, aquaculture bioremediation under heading biotechnology. harvesting enough products from sufficient amounts, even study, nearly impossible, need use genomics techniques identify biologically active compounds. damage our oceanic ecosystems pollution, overfishing destructive fishing methods, opportunities learn more about their commercial potential limited. Although governments intergovernmental agencies are committed funding expanding research, needed discover study ocean's vast, unplumbed resources.
