摘要: This thesis comprises a collection of three distinct essays on the relationship between parents’ socioeconomic, child health outcomes and smoking behaviours. Chapter 2 investigates extent to which misclassification errors in self-reported affects estimates impact parental income adolescents aged 11-15 years old. Smoking participation is modelled using cotinine-validated as binary dependent variables two separate probit models. A comparison marginal effects estimated from both models suggest that misreported leading biased adolescent smoking. Estimates model are robust different specifications account for exposure second-hand smoke. Income-related inequality (the concentration index) also underestimated due variations across quantiles. Chapter 3 uses decomposition methods decompose differences distribution saliva cotinine children/adolescents high low socioeconomic backgrounds. The applied mean-based (Oaxaca-Blinder) method allow quantiles quantile regression recentered influence function methods). Group characteristics (composition effect) accounts larger proportion total difference log compared group these (structural effect). composition effect attributable within home explains more at lower quantiles, indicative passive higher active On other hand, household smoking. Chapter 4 Vietnam Young Lives Survey investigate small-scale weather shocks nutritional status well mechanism through affect status. results shows negatively per capita consumption expenditure (PCCE) but not food PCCE. Disaggregating PCCE into consumption of high-nutrient energy-rich households protect by decreasing increasing affordable quality food. suggests mediated reduction dietary intake. Finally, chapter evidence differential children However, contrary studies, observed be greater amongst wealthier poorer households.
