摘要: Using the serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) method, we generated a profile rat hippocampus. A total 76,790 SAGE tags was analyzed, allowing identification 28,748 different tag species, each representing unique mRNA transcript. The were divided into abundancy classes, ranging from that detected over 500 times to encountered only once in analyzed. species more than 50 represented 0.3% number while accounting for 22% hippocampal mass. majority 5 or less. genes expressed at highest levels mitochondrial origin, consistent with high requirement energy neuronal tissue. At lower level expression, several neuron-specific transcripts encountered, encoding various neurotransmitter receptors, transporters, and enzymes involved synthesis turnover, ion channels pumps, synaptic components. Comparison relative demonstrated glutamate receptors are most frequent hippocampus, important role glutamatergic neurotransmission GABA present approximately 10-fold levels. Several kinases including CaMKII, which levels, its being abundant protein spines pyramidal cells. This is first extensive inventory hippocampus serves as reference future studies aimed elucidating transcriptional responses under conditions. Hippocampus 2001;11:430–444. © 2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
