摘要: The Age of Sail commonly refers to European endeavors after roughly 1450. However, two other examples maritime efflorescence and decline occurred just before this. Early Ming imperial fleets long-distance voyaging in Oceania relativize throw into relief the contingency accomplishment. After discussing these examples, this article shows how they raise questions about limits an ocean basins framework explores why Southeast Asia sits indistinctly between scholarly orientations that look predominantly westward across Indian Ocean eastward Pacific. In light evidence large oceangoing Asian ships were active contemporaneous networks, view features region’s history, it suggests attention Asia’s connections with may merit further investigation.
