摘要: Electric fish generate electric fields by periodically discharging an organ located in their tail. They sense own currents as well those of neighbors through arrays electroreceptors distributed over body surface. Specific modulations the rate discharges (EODs; see p. 83 for list abbreviations) serve social signals. perceive EODs either discrete events or, more commonly, perturbations feedback from EODs. In addition, object fish’s vicinity distorts field and alters current pattern perceived closest to object. This alteration on surface represents image object, analysis such images enables ‘electrolocate’ objects environment. Whereas central processing spatial resembles a form vision (Bastian 1986), temporal periodic signals (Fig. 1) shares aspects with audition (Konishi et al. 1988).
